One Person’s Joke is Another’s Insult

One Person’s Joke is Another’s Insult

Over the past few years, I have seen several members at various networking groups deliver one and ten-minute presentations that contained sexism, racism, religious intolerance, homophobia, and other behaviours which are unacceptable in any professional setting.

In most groups, there is one member per profession— not one white male member, not one Asian female member, just one human member. Everyone is equal. If you do not believe that, please, STAY AWAY! We do not need you in the group.

For those who believe that this sort of behaviour is acceptable, just think about it from the point of view of your wallet.

Imagine you deliver a one-minute speech at your meeting and, to make a point, you tell a racist joke. You then finish by requesting a meeting with the decision-maker at a certain local company. Sitting at the table is a guest who is the brother of your requested meeting. It turns out that the man you wish to speak to is married to a lady of the racial group you have just insulted. Do you honestly think he is going to recommend you to his brother after listening to your presentation?

Sadly, some people believe that telling sexist, racist, or homophobic jokes is acceptable. There are people who dismiss political correctness as attacking their right to free speech. They defend their behaviour by saying it is just a joke and doesn’t hurt anyone. Free speech gives you the right to say anything as long as your words don’t insult or demean anyone else.

This module was almost cut from the site. I thought it was too much of a rant and not delivering a positive message. However, after showing it to a few members of my own group, they insisted it should remain, as it is sadly still needed. In business networking, all are equal, and all are welcome.
